Mrs. Drake from Brookhaven NY is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.

Real Life Reading At Our Own Level!

My students need 4 new sets of nonfiction leveled readers so that they can read books about real life. Many non fiction books are written above the level that kindergarteners can read.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

'What's this?' 'How does that work?' These are just a few of the questions kindergarteners ask everyday! Having non fiction books that can answer those questions for them, while giving them the pride of answering their own questions would be a powerful tool in my kindergarten classroom.

My students are an eclectic mix of individuals that have a desire to learn.

More than half of my class receives free or reduced breakfast &/or lunch. Many of them do not have home support and are struggling with basic kindergarten skills. They have many questions about things in their world, that could be answered through non fiction books, but many of the non fiction books in my classroom are way above their reading level.

My Project

By providing leveled non fiction readers that my students could read with independence would be a powerful tool in my classroom. The children in my class could learn about the world around them, as well as themselves all on their own. This would foster more reading for information (a goal in our curriculum), reading for pleasure (a goal for all teachers!), and give my students pride in doing this all on their own! I think the students will inspire each other to choose these readers and will inspire more non fiction writing within my classroom, as well. These books could also be used for 'research' for informational writing within my classroom, as well. The possibilities are endless!

I have been saving bonus points through my monthly book club for years and yet to have enough points to purchase these books on my own.

With each year that passes, I think how the students that come in and out of my classroom would benefit from non fiction leveled readers. Having these books in my classroom will impact students that I service for years. So many little minds will be enriched, but more so their spirit of doing it all on their own!
