Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are so eager to learn more about the latest technology so they too can create animations, make movies, edit photos, design websites, and 3D print. As their Digital Media Arts teacher, I am charged with the task of designing rigorous, college-prep projects that also inspire the creative, technical, and critical minds of my students.
IA students are kind and creative urban high school freshmen in California with a common mission of being the first in their families to graduate from college.
We know we are lucky to be at a small charter school that focuses on art and technology, but we are in need of support to keep tech central in the classroom.
My Project
At the end of this school year I'll be teaching units on photo editing and graphic design using Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign. A lot of my students last year who were interested in careers in digital art and tech asked me about Wacom tablets, but our school didn't have any for them to try out. For many people it feels more natural to draw on a tablet, like you're using a pen to draw on paper. It would be too much to try to get an entire set of tablets for my students to work with in class, but I'd love to have a few so that each student could try a one out for a day during our design units. I know that if we had tablets many students would become even more enthusiastic about learning design and technology.
This year, I hope to allow students the opportunity to see how professional graphic designers work more efficiently with tablets.
Students will learn valuable design techniques they can employ in college and careers. With your support I'm confident that our students will receive an equitable education and a real shot at college success.
Work like this facilitates the development of college-going habits and skills that will allow our students to successfully make their way through college and become the first in their family to graduate. Thank you for your support.
