My students need live creatures such as mealworms and praying mantis in order to study them, their life cycles, and understand their importance in nature.
Do you remember when you had the opportunity to touch, feel, observe, etc. a real live creature as you learned about it and its life cycle? My students only have pictures and worksheets. Some of them have never even heard or seen of these creatures!
My 3rd grade students are hard-working, show great character in themselves, and to others.
My children love to ask questions and investigate. I have quite a few that lack basic background knowledge in all areas, but especially in science. The students are diverse in their learning styles, but all respond extremely well to hands-on activities.
My Project
Your donation will allow my students the same opportunity that others have outside our district, learning with live creatures in the classroom by providing praying mantis eggs, lady bug eggs, newts and their aquatic ecosystem habit, a butterfly feeding device and a kit for growing, observing and doing experiments with mealworms. My students will be able to have a hands-on approach to learning. They will be able to study multiple species, do experiments that allow them to see how factors can affect things in different ways, learn the importance of these "bugs" in our ecosystems and hopefully grow to love and respect all creatures-big and small. I want my students to have a love for science. I want my struggling readers to have experience through hands-on observation and learning to inspire them, and further their success in learning. I especially want to provide an opportunity for my students to further build their background knowledge.
