Our school is a small and close-knit neighborhood school. The students in my class are energetic, creative and vibrant. But they often struggle academically. As their teacher, I strive to find lessons and class materials that my students will find engaging and relevant. I am often changing my curriculum each year in order to specifically address the needs and interests of my students. Because of this, I am often rotating my book selections from year to year and need additional help to purchase new materials each year.
Many of our students' parents and other family members are also graduates of this school.
Our class sizes are small and student focused. Our school budget is tight, and while we have money for key resources, we lack extra funding for certain class materials and school improvement.
My Project
Each year I specifically tailor my class curriculum to meet the needs and interests of my student. My attempt is the make the work we are doing in class as interesting and relevant to my students as possible. Because of this I am often switching out books that we read as a class from year to year. Due to our limited school supply budget, we are not able to afford new class sets of books every year. While some books are available online and via audio books, I feel it is important to put a real book in the hands of my students so that they can interact with the text, take notes and annotate it as needed while they are reading. Plus, students just need a break from screen, period.
