My class consists of 20 amazingly inquisitive and adventurous first graders in a small, country school in Maine. Our students come to school each day ready to be inspired and learn new things, and take brave chances in order to grow academically and socially. They love to learn about our community, our state, and our world. We are a Title I School with low to high-income students. More than one third of our students are from low-income households, and almost half of our students receive free or reduced meals at school.
Our enthusiastic and smart first grade cuties are an exciting group of mixed interests, abilities, backgrounds, and goals.
Although our learners have different ability levels, they all enjoy immersing themselves in academic challenges. They love to observe, explore, create, and make new discoveries. My students are often eager to use technology to meet their learning goals. Technology frequently allows my students to be self-directed learners and to have voice and choice in their studies.
Thank you for thinking of investing in our classroom with your charitable donation.
My Project
The donations to this project will help to improve my students' understanding and competency in math, writing, reading, science, and STEAM work. The Self Teaching Math Machines provide independent kinesthetic enrichment for Kindergarten through Third Grade. There are 81 equations on each of the push math machines. The Sentence Journal allows students to work on punctuation, capitalization, and sentence structure. The Daily Language Practice Journals will reinforce foundational language skills. They will also boost skills in vocabulary, phonics, grammar, writing, retelling, and reading comprehension.
The Daily Math Practice Journal will refine students' skills with challenging activities in operations and algebraic thinking, measurement and data, geometry, and math computation and problem solving.
The Calendar Math Journal will give students their own space to reinforce calendar concepts and practice math skills. The journal contains daily calendar questions and challenging math problems. There are also pages to graph the weather each day. This will help our class master many of our math standards for first grade calendar work.
The Vocabulary Journals will help our class build our vocabulary skills. This journal helps students' record, organize, and use a lot of new words. Each journal has room for 120 vocabulary entries, space for children to write definitions, synonyms, and sample sentences for each word. There are also picture boxes for adding illustrations for each vocabulary word to help children remember the meaning of the word.
The STEAM Journal helps to document and track their progress through the design process, so they can reflect on previous designs and what they learned from their mistakes. This journal also includes 3 STEAM Challenges, and plenty of pages for testing and retesting their designs. This STEAM Journal will help to develop skills in conducting experiments, recording observations, vocabulary development, and the design process.
