My Students

I teach fifth grade at a suburban school in Oklahoma. My students come from various cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. They are a diverse and unique bunch. Each day, we strive to do the very best we can. We are a Title One school and a large percentage of our students qualify for free or reduced price lunch.

Our school is a learning community.

We try to meet the needs of every student and challenge them to set and reach goals each and everyday.

My Project

When you ask a fifth grader what their favorite school subject is, very rarely will you hear "writing" as the answer. Often times, they find writing tedious and boring, as well as challenging.

I am seeking out resources that will help overcome these challenges and make writing more relevant and fun for my students.

The Ready to Write Prompt Box from Lakeshore Learning, will help students understand all types of writing, as well as the writing process. This box will be used in both whole group and small group instruction. Students will actively participate in planning and writing with various types of prompts.

The second resource I am asking for is another a kit from Lakeshore learning. This kit focuses on using mentor texts to learn how to write. Mentor texts are books that show examples of what is to be taught. When students see examples of good writing, they improve their own writing craft. This kit includes various popular children's books as well as a teacher's guide with activities to connect the literature to student writing.
