The students at our school range from grades K-4. In music class students have the opportunity to sing, move, and use basic classroom instruments to work on skills such as rhythm, beat, melody, and creating songs in collaborative groups. The students also have the opportunity to perform in chorus and band. In addition, there is a free after school strings program run by a local performance studio. In addition, many of our students are taking part in a morning enrichment program. The Integrated Arts teachers are volunteering by donating a morning (or 2) each week to run an enrichment program that gives students the opportunity to try various activities such as robotics, bucket drumming, jump roping and art. I would like to incorporate a Rock Band group to this rotation. This group would allow students to learn new instruments (drum set, guitar, electric bass and keyboards) and learn and create/compose songs together and eventually perform songs. I am hoping to offer this group twice a week as I expect it to be very popular! I would also like to incorporate this into the school music curriculum, varying for different grade levels.
My Project
My students will be able to use these Les Paul electric and acoustic guitars, and Ibanez bass guitars to help learn how to create music together and learn how to compose and perform songs as well. Students will be learning how to read notes, strumming patterns, and how to play chords, even while singing!
Having both acoustic and electric guitars will give my students options and give them multiple experiences as they learn this style of music.
Students who participate in rock band will also learn how to work together in small groups as well as learning music skills such as rhythm, melody, instrumental technique, and collaboration in a fun and engaging way.
