We are a mostly rural area that was heavily affected by Hurricane Harvey in August of 2017. A few weeks into our 2019-2020 school year, our town was hit with another devastating tropical storm: this time, Imelda reflooded us and we ended that year with COVID-19. In 2020, as we finally made it back to school face-to-face because of COVID-19, we had Hurricanes Laura and Delta damage our town, so we were in rebuild mode again. Finally, in 2021 we have had a "normal" year with storms Ida and Nicholas causing minimal damage.
Our students are resilient and won't let a bunch of hurricanes stop their learning.
They are back at school, hard at work, no matter the condition of their homes or the town around us. They also have shown their resiliency by switching from face-to-face to virtual to a combination to face-to-face learning environments. They are wanting to take on a new challenge by competing in robotics competitions this year, one being involved with the unified league. They will be competing with intellectually disabled partners on campus.
My Project
Our students are hoping to embark on a new challenge. We are hoping to participate in two robotics competitions this year. These students have been learning to program robots for two years. They have been given the opportunity to compete in a regional robotics competition and a unified robotics competition, where they will be working with a Life Skills class as well.
These students will be able to use the VEX competition kits to partner with intellectually disabled students on our campus.
Our students are very excited to share their robotics learning with their new friends on campus this year.
