My Students

The students at my school are inquisitive, compassionate leaders who come from a wide array of racial, economic, and linguistic backgrounds. About half of the students' first language is Spanish, while the other half speak English as their primary language. Each student is in the process of learning and improving one of those two languages, as they become bilingual and biliterate.

Our school works hard to make sure students develop a strong sense of self, an ability to listen and learn from one another, and an ability to take an active role in changing their surrounding community for the better.

In a district that has been struggling to provide many of the supports we need for students, we are needing to rely more and more on parent contributions and outside donations.

My Project

These books, games, and manipulatives will be used for whole-group instruction, small group guided reading lessons, and independent reading both at school and at home. I want to get lots of books and interactive activities into my students' hands to keep their motivation high and guide them in their reading journey. High-engagement text and activities make the hard work of learning to read worth it! Each student will have their own alphabet letter plate to help them with independent reading and writing practice at their tables, and I will have manipulatives to support them with the skills they need to develop.

After a year of virtual kindergarten, my first grade students are ready for in-person reading with real books.

I hope to give them lots of titles they will love, based on their interests. We are sending books home weekly so students can have appropriate-leveled text to help them practice reading nightly with their families. The book bags will last many years and allow families to share in the enjoyment of our classroom library. I also have a few students who need hands-on practice with math and counting, and hope to use the interactive games and manipulatives during small group instruction as well. It is wonderful to be able to support their in-person counting patterns and addition strategies with the tools we have available.
