I teach students with disabilities in 2nd and 4th grade. I serve 10 students in my special education classroom but serve about 55 students during my time supporting in the general education classroom. My class of 10 may seem small, but these students impact the lives of so many others. While my students have disabilities, they push everyone around them to see the ability in themselves and as well as everyone around them.
My students are some of the most creative, intelligent, and caring people I have ever met.
I consider myself lucky to spend time with them every day. My role is twofold. I support each of my 10 students in their general education classrooms. During this time, I am available to provide clarification on a lesson or assignment, or to work in a small group setting within the general education classroom. I also work with my students in the special education classroom where we focus heavily on both reading and math interventions. The goal is for the students to gain the skills necessary to best access the general education curriculum and thrive as learners and leaders!
My Project
These books will allow my students to explore the world through text. As many of my students have a disability that directly impacts literacy, it is not often they find many books that they will enjoy that are on a reading level that best meets their needs. Additionally, I want them to have access to diverse text that represents all types of people and highlights differences among us for the good they create.
It is my goal to create a library where each student is able to find a book that interests them while also being at their reading level.
These books will be used for guided reading and writing prompts for the students to develop their writing skills. Initially these books will allow my students to access education virtually. I plan to use these books in virtual small group, whole group, and individual lessons, but also look forward to the day I can use these books in a school building with my students physically in front of me.
