Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Most of my students are second language learners who will be in english classes by fourth grade. Many of the students do not have access to literature in their homes. Weaker readers often do not read outside the classroom. These materials will help and encourage the students to become better readers.They will listen to stories and will be able to follow along in the books. Vocabulary flash cards with picture/words are essential for these students. I have made some tapes to go along with some of the books last school year. This was a little difficult to do this year, because I also tutor students who are Katrina victims. I gave most of the books and tapes to the students because they asked for them. This project will allow the students to become better learners of english. I really would like to provide the students with resources that will allow them to increase their vocabulary skills, listening skills and reading skills.Through these activities and materials will also allow the students to become better writers.
I am the librarian at an Elementary school with economically disadvantaged students.We also have students from the Katrina Hurricane. Students in grades K - Fifth will benefit from this ongoing project. 95% of the students are on free or reduced lunch. The Title I funds have been depleted.I am constantly working to find new and better ideas to reach each child in need.
The materials that will be used for this experience are listening stations, tape recorders, and audio books.
My primary focus will be on my second language learners, Katrina learners, and any students who are at risk due to chronic reading/language academic deficiencies.
This will help and encourage studenets to become better readers and learners. Reading is the key for these lifelong readers in my classes. My students and I thank you in advance for donating your time and money to our project.
