I have been teaching at our school for the last seven years. The students selected for Reading Recovery are first graders that have tested significantly lower in reading concepts compared to the national average. The students selected into this research based program participate in 12-20 weeks of individualized instruction. In addition to teaching Reading Recovery, I also teach Leveled Literacy Intervention (LLI). Leveled Literacy Intervention is also research based and was designed by Fountas and Pinnell. This program was created based on the lesson structure of Reading Recovery, but is used with a small group of students. I teach four LLI groups daily. Each group consists of four or five students.
These interventions are designed to accelerate reading progress to close the achievement gap.
During the 30 minute lesson the students reread familiar books, work on fluency of letters, break words apart, write stories and read a new book each day. The students that participate in either of these intense interventions not only show progress with their reading but they also gain the confidence that will continually support and extend their literacy development.
My Project
My students need flexible seating to support their needs within my classroom. I teach a variety of children at different grade levels throughout my day. Some of these students need to be able to "wobble" to comfortably sit and learn.
By providing my classroom with wobble seats, more of my students can be successful with learning to read!
It can be very difficult for students who are not physically capable of sitting in a regular chair to be attentive during an entire lesson. Wobble seats allow students to "move" without distracting the learning of the other children around them. Therefore, wobble stools would give the students in my classroom a new seating choice and would allow them to feel more comfortable and be more engaged while reading.
