"Hello everyone! I am currently teaching a self contained special education class (12:1:1). Most of my students are in Kindergarten and I have one first grade student. Their disabilities range from speech and language impaired, autism, health impairments, and learning disabled. They are very energetic and very busy which is why we are known as the "busy bees". My students inspire me everyday because even though they have cognitive or health impairments they are still full of life and have beautiful and joyful spirits.
Unfortunately, this year New York suffered from numerous budget cuts. Due to this fact, Teacher's Choice money (money we can use for our classrooms) was cut drastically. I now have very little money to spend on supplies, materials, and books for my classroom. This is unfortunate because the students are the ones who are suffering the most due to lack of supplies.
I recently moved into a new classroom and the classroom library was very disorganized and outdated. The previous class was a bilingual special education class so most of the books in the library were in Spanish. Since they were 3-5th grade students the books are too challenging for my Kindergartners, who are monolingual (only English). In addition, my guided reading library is very weak, I only have guided readers (the teacher guides the students on the first page, modeling how to read it then allows students to practice with the remainder of the book. Each session the teacher picks one area of focus for instruction, for example: using the pictures to tell us what is happening in the story) leveled A and B which is the beginning stage of Kindergarten. The problem is, I have students who read at a higher level such a D & E but I don't have those levels for the students to use. In order for my students to grow as readers they need the correct materials that will challenging them.
I am requesting 15 book sets of guided reading books for my students. These books will not only allow me to scaffold their learning by being their guide but it will provide books that are "just right" for the students' reading level for independent practice. This is important because books that are too hard frustrate them and books that are too easy bore them which hinders the reading process. Your help will ensure that my students will become expert readers and be ready for first grade!
