Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Have you ever embarked upon the journey of learning something new in a language that you don't speak fluently? My students are learning to read English, their second language, but, we need more resources to keep them engaged and help reinforce what they are learning.
My classroom this year is very different from previous years.
I have a few students who speak only English, some students who do not speak English, and others who speak English and Spanish, but are not considered fluent in either language. Despite their fluency levels, all students will be assessed in English and Spanish. This means they must read and comprehend both languages by the end of the year.
Since this is the first year that we are teaching language arts in two languages to our kindergarten students, we have very few materials in English.
My Project
I am requesting Meet The Sight Word Easy Reader Books and a Sight Word Readers Parent Pack to send home with my students so they can read with their parents every night. I am also requesting UNIFIX Word Family Cards, Now I Know My Word Families Learning Mats, Sight Word Readers Variety Pack, Word Family Stories & Activities, Word Family Short Vowel Activities and Magnets, and Word Family Stories & Activities that my students will be completing in small groups or independently while I guide other students during their designated small group time with me.
Repeated exposure to sight words and word families will help increase my students' reading fluency.
Although they are only emerging readers now, I already see the impact that reading and writing has made on their self-confidence. With your support, my students will have more materials to help them practice foundational skills that are essential to becoming good readers.
