Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students in our kindergarten classroom can be found before school with their noses pressed against our classroom windows, anxiously awaiting our time together.
Our class is located in a small neighborhood school in California.
We are a public, high poverty school, with the majority of the students receiving free or reduced price meals at school. The families I serve are hard-working folks who want the best for their children. While we speak only English in our classroom, many of the children speak Spanish or Punjabi at home. The children have living situations as diverse as they are.
Some students live in nuclear families, others with single parents, a few with foster parents, and still others in multifamily homes. While we are considered a general classroom, we have students with challenges like autism, ADHD, and speech/language delays who call our room home. Although we come from varied backgrounds, abilities, and cultures, we stand united in our desire to learn and work together! Our class motto is, "The good you do, will come back to you!"
My Project
I can think of no greater indicator of future success than the ability to read. In an effort to prepare my students for a lifetime of reading, we need 5 sets of beginning level book bins. The children will work in small groups with me. Working with me in small groups, each child will have a copy of the same text. Using these books, we will learn and practice literacy skills together.
Each child also needs a book pouch to safely house the book they are reading along with a learning journal I have provided, where they will record and track their progress on the road to literacy. These pouches will ensure efficiency and organization in addition to ensuring the books are kept in good condition.
A collection of early readers and book pouches will help our kindergarten students on their journey toward literacy.
With your help, these resources will literally find their way into the hands of some eager learners.
