Some of my students come in to Kindergarten reading but the majority of them do not. They are fired up and passionate to learn. I have a small leveled library but if I could grow it, with your help, students could take books home to practice reading.
My students come from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
They are excited to come to school every day and enjoy the learning, playing and challenges that they are faced with every day. My students attend a Public School for students that range from kindergarten to 4th grade. We have recently become a Leader In Me school and my kids are working on taking leadership over their school and home lives. Although this may be tricky for my young learners, they are becoming more independent and taking more responsibility for their learning every day.
My Project
I was talking about Circle of Control the other day. I asked if it was in their control to read for 20 minutes each night. Most students agreed that is was; however, one student said she didn't have books at home so she couldn't read. After talking to her father, he confirmed it. She is a bilingual student and because her mom is the primary caregiver and can not read English, books are non existent in their home. This motivated me to start a Take Home system for all my students. They may check out a few books to read at home and when they return them, they will be allowed to check out new ones. In order for this to work successfully, I need more books! I want these books to be leveled readers so that they can read them to their parents. This will help with their fluency, confidence and overall reading abilities.
One of my jobs as a kindergarten teacher is to inspire and instill a love for learning in my students.
