I am a speech/language therapist serving students at both an elementary school and an early pre-school learning center. I am also the coordinator of our school's "Cozy Closet" which provides warm coats and new shoes to students in need.
Due to the current tough economic times, many of my students' parents are struggling just to cover food and shelter.
Clothing and shoes are often low on the list of priorities. I have seen children come to school with shoes that are too small or so tattered that they barely stay on their feet. One little boy arrived at school with duck tape wrapped around his shoes in a desperate attempt to make his worn out shoes last just a little bit longer. Sometimes on cold winter days, students will get off the bus wearing sandals because those are the only shoes they own. On one occasion, a little girl complained that her feet hurt. Upon closer inspection, I discovered that her shoes were 1 or 2 sizes too small. How can you possibly concentrate on learning if you are distracted by cold, painful feet.
My Project
My students are in need of Hobibear running shoes, will allow our school to stock the "Cozy Closet" with all different sizes of shoes for both girls and boys. When a child comes to school with shoes that are worn-out or too small, we will be able to provide them with a brand new comfortable pair of shoes. Now these children will be able to focus on learning and not on how cold or uncomfortable their feet are. Best of all, not only does this help the child, but it also makes one less financial burden for the parents.
Imagine trying to listen to your teacher explain addition problems while your feet are aching from those shoes that are too small.
A donation of new shoes will make it possible for all of my students to run and play comfortably. It will also enable them to more fully focus their attention on classroom activities. A comfortable child is a more focused and engaged learner.
