Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a teacher in a low-income area in Houston, my students face struggles in and out of the classroom. With the recent devastation of Hurricane Harvey, many students lost their homes, uniforms and supplies. Some of my students are still displaced after almost seven months. It is my job to make the classroom a home away from home. Also, many students are 1-3 years as a ESL (English as a Second Language) student. Despite the challenges, all of my students are eager and willing to learn to his or her potential.
Many students move around from parent to parent or family member throughout the school year.
We have students that are considered "homeless" and all are on the free and reduced breakfast/lunch program. Students seek stability and find it in my reading classroom.
My Project
The materials I am requesting are basic supplies that promote high levels of learning and a good start to teaching classroom management at the beginning of the year. I focus on the good behavior and expectations rather than discipline. Students know the consequences from day one, but are so excited about the rewards and incentives so that becomes the focus. Students use file folders to track his/her behavior from class to class. I use a ticket system which promotes good behavior and use incentives to reward my students. I like using the "graph" poster to track classroom behavior as a whole class. The ink and paper allow me to print things in my classroom and in color when needed for my students. I would truly appreciate your support and we together can educate the next generation of amazing talent.
