Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work in a Title I school in a small community with an amazing group of eighteen kindergarten students and their families. I say families as well because I truly believe in educating the families as well as the students.

The school I work in has had a lot of turnover with staff during the last couple of years, and some of that has to do with the dynamics of the area but also within our community. Working with these families truly makes you go the extra mile to help the families and students have a better life when they walk through your classroom door.
Many of my students are English Language Learners, from single family homes, no pre-school background, and their families struggle to make ends meet. Incorporating activities and engaging learning opportunities in my classroom that follow students home is one of my goals when families have me, as their teacher.
My Project
Planning, creating, building, bringing culture into the classroom, building community relationships, and learning through block play: Students will use gross motor skills and spatial awareness while developing creative thinking and language development as they build structures using the magnetic blocks, mirrored and rainbow blocks. Use of our STEM architecture books would assist with replicating buildings and bridges, landmarks and such with the use of animals figures (polar animals, artic animals, safari animals, farm animals, puppy and kitties) and matchbox cars students would develop language skills and increase community awareness through imaginative play. Higher-level thinking questions such as: What part of the structure or marble run should we start making first? What materials do you think were used to build the structure? Extension activities in other core academic areas could include math—geometry, weight and measurement, science—force and motion, literacy—language development, and art—design.
Students will have the opportunity to become architects while building language, creativity and community relations while learning through block play.
Students will get to see first hand what an architect has to do to plan out their masterpieces. Students will be working together, independently, in groups to build and create structures of their own or from a Structures/Castle Book that I've created with images from all over the world and their location.
