This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our Ninth Grade Academy is filled with innovative, creative, passionate students eager to explore what it means to be a high school student. Our school is housed in a community that is vibrant and resilient, but also impacted by violence and other systemic struggles that affect our students.
We want to make sure that regardless of what they may face before entering our doors each day, every student in our Ninth Grade Academy has an opportunity for success.
We are proud of them for showing up ready to work and learn every day and excited by their eagerness to contribute to the world around them. They are volunteers in our elementary schools, they are athletes proudly representing their school, they are readers, writers, creators, and so much more.
My Project
Some of our students do not regular have access to a place to clean themselves or their clothes. Some of our students come to school hungry and need a nutritious snack to get them through the day. We've requested items that will assist our students meeting these basic needs so that they can enter each classroom with confidence that they can succeed every day.
These materials will help students feel a part of our community and feel supported in achieving their goals.
We show our students love by extending our support outside of reading and mathematics; these materials will support the whole child.
The drawstring bags will serve as discrete laundry bags for the students to bring to school and the detergent will allow students to use the school's laundry machines. Deodorant will be provided to students that need but may not be able to buy on their own; similarly, body wipes will be provided to students who do not have regular access to a shower.
These resources will make a difference in students' learning because they will be able to enter the classroom with their mind focused on the learning at hand rather than other basic needs they need fulfilled.
