At a bustling inner city K-8 public school, we are preparing to celebrate our 25th anniversary.
The 6th, 7th, and 8th-grade students have elective courses. Ellie, Haleigh, Jorge, Spencer, and Violet are representative of the students that have elected to take Project Lead the Way (PLTW). PLTW is a design course that focuses on engineering, design, math, science, and architecture.
These students exemplify the type of character we hope to develop at our school. Creative, collaborative, dedicated, and curious.
This project will help the students learn how to combine math, science and artistic principles in order to build products that are both attractive and festive. By working in collaboration with a guest artist, students will gain real-world experience. They will be able to see an idea become a reality by working through the design cycle. They will learn how to turn paper-based plans into real products. Finally, the products will be used to help our community celebrate.
In Their Own Words
We are trying to build giant inflatables to help celebrate the amazing work our school has done for the past 25 years. We researched various forms of party decorations and found that inflatables are not that hard to make. We would like to work with a local artist to build customized inflatables for the celebration.
As team leaders, we represent the three different grade level PLTW courses. We have forged leadership skills by working together to source the materials and knowledge we need to make our idea a reality. We are developing strong creative thinking and communication skills through this opportunity by talking to stakeholders and possible supporters.
The problem we are trying to address is making our school celebration as big and nice as we feel it deserves to be. For the past 25 years countless teachers, students, families, and community members have worked together to make our school great. Our school started as an idea, like this project, and with hard work became the awesome place that it is today.
