I always begin the day with a smile and greeting to each student. This gives the students a chance to share with me and their friends about something they have going on in their lives. This is important to build a classroom community and family.
The school I work in is a Title I school.
There is a very high percentage of low income families in the school district. This often makes it difficult for students to excel. I also have several students with special needs with varying levels. I want to do my best to support my students, however there are so many needs that it is difficult to be everything to everyone. I am trying my best to make my classroom a place of safety and peace for these students so they can reach their potential.
My goal is to create a classroom that creates students ready for the 21st century but also fosters caring, understanding and compassion.
My Project
I have been teaching for 20 years and though my classroom is bright and friendly, I need it to update it to 21st Century standards. I have collected items like bean bag chairs and rugs through second hand stores, however some things are still needed. We have 6 iPads in our classroom, but only individual chargers. We need a charging station so we can make sure these are ready for use every day. There are lots of times we get in the middle of an activity and the one of the iPads quits working-UGHHH! This gets the students very frustrated.
Of all of the tools in my classroom, technology is the tool that gets my students most excited about learning.
One of my students favorite games to play on the iPad is Kahoot. It is a game that allows me to create quizzes in all subject areas to quickly assess the students' understanding. They love the friendly competition and I love being able to quickly see their strengths and weaknesses. We need stackable stools so the students can easily move around the room for games like Kahoot and teamwork activities.
I also have been attending a balanced literacy Professional Learning Class. These stools will be very useful when my students want to do partner activities like partner reading and writing because they are so easy to move around the room.
