Kindergarten is a unique group of children. They are curious, busy, and are receptive to new experiences. Because this age level is so different from any other, it requires careful planning and the ability to be flexible to adjust according to what they need. I love the fact that each day is completely different from the previous one. Their ability to come back and try again is infectious!
My students love to learn about science, math, reading, writing and other topics in our classroom.
They primarily use hands-on activities to engage and support their learning. The bedrock of our curriculum is following the Common Core. Recently, the focus has been on implementing more STEM features to support their learning topics. I believe in implementing these features through thematic instruction which allows them to retain information for longer periods of time and enjoy the art of learning.
My Project
Students in Kindergarten need to experience our new emphasis on science, technology, engineering, and math by utilizing manipulatives to engage their natural curiosity on how things work in their world. They need to see, hear, and touch objects to see the cause and effect of their project. Using their observational skills, they are able to discern and plan what their next steps are. Both girls and boys need hands-on activities such as the Magna-tiles to reinforce concepts being taught in the classroom.
It is important to ensure that students carry over their knowledge from the standards by working in pairs to build language, cooperation, and problem-solving skills.
I will provide time for teams to share their learning with their classmates and support their "ah-ha" moments with others so that all children may benefit.
