My students need high quality cameras in order to continually improve their skills in developing our school's yearbook and Journalism program, in which they develop their own newspaper and newsletter.
My students are the future of this country. With such a wide variety of backgrounds entering the doors of my classroom each and every day, I am positive that I am looking into the eyes of future leaders of our community, state, and country. These young men and women are capable of just about anything they can imagine, as long as they are given the opportunity.
Despite their very different socioeconomic backgrounds, the students that I have the opportunity to teach all have one thing in common: they need someone to believe in them.
Many of these students do not receive the encouragement and support at home necessary to ensure a positive outlook on their futures. Most of this population comes from working families whose primary goal is to keep afloat financially.
Nearly fifteen percent of residents in the area are living with incomes below the poverty line. Nearly five percent of those residents are living an income below fifty percent of the poverty line. The rate of children in the area living below the poverty level is nearly thirty percent. These are the families that depend on us to teach, guide, and encourage their children to succeed.
My Project
As a school with such a diverse population and heavy need for academic resources, it is often difficult to secure funding for programs aside from those deemed specifically academic, leaving those classified as the "fine arts" to rely on a very limited budget. With such a range in demographics, it is beneficial to have a Journalism program that can provide a positive outlet and prepare students for the requirements of the workforce post graduation.
With the donation of this camera, our students will be given access to a resource that would otherwise not be afforded to our program.
With this piece of technology, students can have more hands-on training to fine tune their skills to become more skilled photographers and historians. Allowing students the chance to utilize such equipment allows them the chance to gain experience that will follow them after their years in the Journalism program. The program also offers a great jump-start to a meaningful career.
