Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
A typical day in my science classroom involves many learning opportunities throughout each class period. My 8th-grade students are taking a high school physical science course that is very rigorous- this course includes chemistry, physics, and complex math.
I have a broad range of students in my classes, from low-level learners to gifted students.
My school has an extremely high rate of students who receive free lunch, and we are the largest Title I school in the state. Yet they truly have the biggest hearts I have seen in my 10+ years in education. My students come to school with smiles on their faces, a polite "good morning" or "thank you," and a strong desire to please their teachers. They are genuinely good kids who face challenges in their daily lives, and some of the stories break my heart as a mother and teacher. Despite what life is throwing at them, they are still working hard and still trying to do their very best. They have the hearts of champions, and I love working with these students every day.
My Project
I teach a High School Physical Science course to 8th graders. Some topics can be boring and students struggle to make a connection.
I would like to have these items to pique my students' natural curiosity and engage them in learning about Physical Science in the world around them.
The Lava Lamp would allow students to see energy transformations and convection in action. Hand boilers will allow students to use their thermal energy to move the liquid upwards, also an energy transformation! I can also use the hand boilers when we get to chemistry and boiling points.
The Snap Circuits would replace some outdated wires, battery, and light bulbs, and connections that I use teach about electricity and circuits. The outdated materials are challenging and students struggle to get the circuits to work.
The Newton's Cradle will be used to demonstrate Newton's Laws of motion.
I'm also asking for light covers. My students often complain that the glare on the board makes in hard to see. With these covers, I can help reduce the eye strain and glare on the board.
