Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a school in Hialeah, Florida, and my school receives Title I funding because over 90% of our students are on free or reduced lunch, and our community is made up of low-income families. Like most low income families, our parents hold down two-three jobs and barely make ends meet. However, don't feel sorry for my school or our students because although our pockets may not be full, our hearts certainly are. We are a loving family, but every family needs a little help sometimes in motivating and inspiring their "kids".
As their counselor, I am always in awe of my students' resiliency and hard work as they strive to navigate adolescence in homes where for most of them English is a second language and many are being raised in single parent households.
You can help me reward theses students for "showing up" ready to learn, each and every day in spite of obstacles faced.
My Project
Attendance is crucial for learning to take place. In a school where the majority of students come from low-income homes, are new to this country or simply will hopefully become first-generation college graduates, motivation is a key factor for them to succeed in school. I would like to not only encourage my students to come to school every day but to teach them that their commitment to doing so is recognized and rewarded.
Many times, the students in my school need something tangible that they may not be able to get from home.
Each 9 week period, with your help, all students with perfect attendance will have a chance to win one of two new bikes. Help me motivate my students to come to school each and every day. By doing so, you will also be helping them improve academically and close the achievement gap they face.
