Help me give my students the tools to reset, refocus and stay calm while they deal with the ups and downs and challenges of classwork, learning and working with others.
My students come in each day ready to learn, however they bring with them their own individual challenges. About fifty percent of my 3rd Grade students are English Language Learners and speak a language in addition to English, languages that include Bengali, Urdu, Creole, Arabic, Spanish and Uzbek. Some of my students are shy, self-conscious and hesitant speakers, get easily distracted and have a difficult time resetting and refocusing. They are also working to make up ground and get on level. Some students are between one and two years below level. With the interruptions in the school lives of students over the past two years, students also have a higher level of anxiety, lower comfort level and fewer skills when dealing with peers, difficulty focusing, transitioning and identifying and dealing with their emotions. I have selected activities that students can use to write and reflect; books to read about and identify their feelings; sensory viewers to calm down; and spacial reasoning tasks with wooden blocks and pattern blocks to stay active and engaged while refocusing. I think these activities will help students develop self-monitoring skills, learn about their emotions, learn to cope while being actively engaged as they try to refocus. Can you help us reset and stay calm as we strive to close learning gaps and make progress everyday?
