Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Everyday 13 students walk into my classroom ready to learn, grow, and explore. All students who enter my classroom are on the autism spectrum and at different levels of development. One area that all students with autism struggle in, is social skills. This is never more apparent than at recess.
I teach an energetic group of 10 boys, 3 girls, in a structured K/1 autism class for students with moderate autism .
My school works hard to provide the best education possible, however one area that is lacking is social skills. During recess students have been having a difficult time engaging in play with typically developing peers. With these items my students will have more chances to engage with the general education students. Both groups of students will be able to grow in their social skills, collaboration skills, problem solving skills, and communication skills. To use these items my students will have to work together with each other and general education students.
These items will give my students a way and a desire to engage with there general education peers.
My Project
I teach a class of fantastic autistic Kindergarten and First grade students. We all know that students who are autistic struggle socially. This is never more evident than at recess time. In an effort to help my students learn to share, compromise, work together, and solve problems I want to get some items that can be used during recess with their general education peers.
Each item on the list will engage my students with the general education students and help build social skills, critical thinking, collaborating, problem solving, and build vocabulary.
By providing these building and play materials during recess, my students will be given a need and desire to engage with others as well as learning to work together. This project not only benefits my 13 students but the other general education Kindergarten classes as well. In total 73 students will be able to work on the skills mentioned above.
