My Students

My students are 6th grade Writing, Reading and History students in a public school in California. We have a range of students at all ability levels. They spend half of their school day in my classroom, integrating reading, writing and history to build their academic skills.

My students need these popular fiction books to engage them, spark their curiosity for world events, and boost their reading skills and comprehension.

All students need opportunities to engage directly, and these materials will make all the difference in their ability to develop and reward their reading, writing, and thinking skills.

My Project

All of my students want to love to read. Having a classroom library filled with engaging books will give each of my classes choices of independent reading novels that will interest and engage them. We are always looking to make connections between our curriculum and the outside world. These newly published book have been recommended by middle school librarians.

We need independent reading books that will engage them, boost their love of reading, and bring the outside world into our classroom.

Our titles include popular novels such as the Golden Compass and Scythe series, in addition to titles such as Song for a Whale, The Line Tender, The Bridge Home, New Kid, White Bird, Remarkable Journey of Coyote Sunrise, To Night Owl from Dogfish. This grant will allow me to enrich our classroom library with newly published quality literature that students can read, thus enabling them to find books they'll love.

Students can then take Accelerated Reader quizzes on these books, which boosts their reading comprehension skills. This will set them up for success in other areas of learning, as well as in high school and beyond.
