I am a Pre-Kindergarten teacher at Glynn H. Brock Elementary in Slidell, LA. Our school was completely devastated by Hurricane Katrina. My 20+ years of teaching materials and resources were destroyed in flood waters at the school or at my home. To qualify for the Pre-K program, the families must qualify for free or reduced lunch. Because these families have limited incomes, buying literature isn't a priority for them. Buying a book is not as important as paying the rent or providing the basic necessities. I would like to replace some of my books and books with cassette tapes that are used at the classroom listening center. My students come from homes where there is very little communication. The television "baby sits" them from sun up to sundown. Being exposed to quality literature will increase their knowledge of the world by exposing them to situations and experiences they would not see in their everyday lives. They will gain increased vocabulary as they begin to associate new pictures with new words. When asked higher level thinking questions, they will develop comprehension skills as they answer in complete sentences. During our center time, the children will be able to listen to books on tape. They will learn direction following skills as they "read" the rebus directions to operate the tape recorder. The children always express excitement when they discover that they can rewind the tape and listen to a story over and over again. The 22 students that I teach will benefit from books and books with cassette tapes because they will develop vocabulary, comprehension, higher level thinking skills and direction following skills. I want my students to have this experience because most of them do not have books in their homes. Books can expose them to new things and broaden their horizons as they achieve academic success.
