Help me give my students a COMPLETE Non-Fiction leveled library set to have access to a variety of engaging Non-Fiction texts at their level in their classroom.
My students from Houston, Texas are part of a transformative learning environment built on character development. My goal as their teacher is to empower them to become confident, compassionate, and responsible leaders. In our class, everyday is a perfect day to have a good day. Every day is an opportunity to take ownership of our unique learning abilities. My first graders are ready to explore, learn, take risks, and discover the leader within. It is my job as an educator to facilitate the best possible environment for optimal learning with regard to each, individual student's needs. I consider myself very lucky to have an incredible group of students, just waiting to reveal their learning potential!
My Project
My students spend an hour of their day every day, if not more, in engaging reading. During this time they work independently to meet their reading goals and practice current reading skills while I am pulling guided reading groups. In first grade, the reading levels vary from non-readers all the way to second/third grade reading levels. With that said, finding appropriate level Non-Fiction texts for all students to work on individually is a challenging task when we are limited to our classroom library and only able to check out so many books from our school literacy library at a time. It is important for each student to be able to read a Non-Fiction text at their level at any given time in the classroom. Often, students will become frustrated because the Non-Fiction texts available to them are either to easy and not challenging enough, or too hard to match their level while they are reading/working independently on Non-Fiction reading strategies. This will allow me to differentiate independent reading stations to make sure that independent reading, specifically Non-Fiction, is meaningful for every student. Donations to this project are now being matched thanks to support from Someone Who Cares. This holiday season, they want kids everywhere to have the books, pens, paper, and other classroom basics they need to learn.
