My students need hands on materials to aid in the development and acquisition of literacy skills such as sight words, letters of the alphabet, reading comprehension as well as phonemic awareness and phonics.

Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

John Will Elementary School was founded in 1965 and named for John M. Will, a veteran Mobile Press Register writer. The school was dedicated September 26, 1965. Our staff of 30+ teachers serve almost 600 students in grades PreK-5. Our clubs include the National Honor's Society, E.Y.E.-Engaging Youth in Engineering, Student Council, and Good News Club. We participate in an annual Food Drive for the local Bay Area Food Bank, an annual Toy Drive for the local Salvation Army Angel Tree, Drug Free Week, Father's Walk Your Child to School Day, Bullying Awareness Campaign, and the annual United Way coin drive just to name a few.

My Project

My goal is to purchase various materials that can be utilized by the PreK 3 and 4 as well as kindergarten, first and second grade students. The materials would allow me to break a whole class into groups. Each group could work at a center. We have 5 kindergarten classes, a PreK 3 self-contained SPED class, and a PreK 4 class. Younger children require more hands on materials to work with. I think centers would hold their attention.

The puzzles, blocks, wiki sticks, board books, clay, and literacy games that address sight words, reading comprehension, phonics, letters of the alphabet, and phonemic awareness will help my students to develop the literacy skills they require to be fluent, proficient readers who comprehend what they read.

The activities that I have selected could easily be utilized in a whole group or multiple small groups. As the library media specialist I work with all students grades PreK-5. I have an opportunity to help a lot of students.
