Help me give my students a variety of glow in the dark games and supplies including giant Connect Four, Monopoly, Pick Up Sticks, Twister, bowling, basketball, pencils, tape, tablecloths, slime, and glow lights.
"It's Friday! Friday! Friday! Don't wanna work, I want to play!" This is a favorite chant of my fifth graders who visit at least three classrooms each Friday, singing and being praised for their hard work that they have completed that week.
The students' enthusiasm for celebrating their hard work permeates throughout the entire building.
They are positive role models for the younger grade levels in our school. I really strive to teach my students to be the positive role models I know they can be.
We also have a local National Guard Unit in our area and have a lot of military families with parents, grandparents, uncles, aunts, and cousins serving in our beautiful country. Our staff also has the opportunity to focus on homeless students in our area by attending workshops and lectures to meet the needs of our students. We are dedicated to helping our students and their families in every way we can.
My Project
Have you ever had a learning day that is spent in the dark with neon and glow in the dark supplies? My fifth graders look forward to glow days and the funny thing about it, I never get a complaint about doing math, reading, or writing when it is a glow day.
The kids are so wrapped up in the excitement of the classroom being transformed into a glow room that they forget that they are actually doing assignments that we normally do during a regular school day.
It is so awesome and I love seeing how engaged they are into their learning!
This project will enhance our glow days that we already have and do. I want to incorporate some fun board games into our learning. For example, the giant Connect Four game could be used for comprehension questions of the story we are working on. They have to answer a question before they can move their checker piece into the board or the game of Twister in the glow room can incorporate math skills. The basketball hoop could be hung on the door and the kids could shoot the ball after completing their spelling work with neon highlighters. The kids would not just be playing the games, but practicing core standards in a fun way. Writing summaries with neon pencils in the dark with glowing lights and tape is so much more fun than just sitting and writing at their desks during the regular school day.
You can ask any of my fifth graders, and they will tell you that they don't want to miss school when it's a glow day. We are Ready, Set, to Learn and Glow!
