Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are bright preschoolers and kindergarteners with special needs. They are three to five-year-olds with various disabilities including autism, cerebral palsy, other health impairment, and speech/language delays.
My students are from low-income families and almost all are English language learners.
Some have just arrived in the United States from Mexico with parents who do not speak English. Despite the many challenges they face, they come ready each day to learn and play with the most positive attitudes.
It has been a true blessing to watch my students learn and grow. Their determination and eagerness to learn are what fuels me. These young scholars amaze me every single day with their big hearts! A day in our classroom consists of enthusiasm, energy, and excitement. Every accomplishment, big or small, is celebrated!
My Project
It’s been a great school year for us! My students love our treasure chest that I use as a learning incentive. This is a special treasure chest all my students know well. I teach a preschool special education class and my students are rewarded for good behaviors and staying on task. It keeps them highly motivated.
This project will help my students make good choices throughout the day with learning incentives, a visual timer for time management, and playtime in the workbench play area.
We will be adding whistles, bubbles, punch balloons, stamps, and so much more to our treasure chest. Positive reinforcement is huge in our class. It is a simple way of encouragement, letting my students know we recognize they are trying their best. They always feel so proud and happy when they are able to pick a toy to play with knowing they made good choices.
A visual timer will help my students with time management and staying on task during group activities. Preschoolers cannot look at a clock and grasp the concept of time; this tool will help us immensely. They get many options for play during their breaks and it would be great to add a work bench play area in a classroom. They will engage in cooperative play as talk, share, and learn together!
