I live in a rural community. The majority of our families face economic challenges on a daily basis. Even after a year, some are struggling to recover from Hurricane Florence. Now, we are closed from meeting in our classrooms and trying to complete online, digital course work.
For my students, our classroom became escape form the stress of home; now that is gone!
Home is their classroom and I visit daily when I present their video lessons.
But online and digital resources are not the same as having a physical resource in your hand. I want to provide my students with a book of their very own. Book ownership can be so empowering to young readers as they begin to develop their reading fluency and skills.
My Project
These books will provide my students will fun engaging reading material in their own homes! Our school year was abruptly sent to digital format without students being able to access our school library.
Kids having books, especially books of their own, is a powerful tool for the development of early literacy.
As my students prepare to become 2nd graders, these books will empower them to continue reading even though we cannot be physically together any more this school year. Digital resources are wonderful, but nothing beats the power of a physical book!
