Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school district has a predominantly Hispanic student population. The students in this neighborhood are often from low-income homes. Despite this, these students come excited to dive into new worlds and delve into intriguing lessons filled with observations, experimentation, and engaging discussions, especially when PE is involved!
My class of twenty-eight sixth graders are active, and enjoy structured time outside during PE (and of course unstructured time as well!).
However, because we are a low-income school, subjects outside English language arts, English language development, and math are often pushed to the side, most especially PE. Our most consistent form of PE is a golf program our district is a part of, and we attend once a month. We do not have a PE instructor, so I take the students out as often as possible. However, this does not happen as often as it should. And to top it off, we do not have access to PE equipment. The equipment on this project would give us a wider variety of games we can play.
My Project
My classroom is at a low-income, Title I school. As a result, subjects such as English language arts, English language development, and math are heavily focused on, while most other curriculum is pushed aside and rarely done. This includes science, social studies, and most especially PE.
Our school lacks PE supplies, so time spent outside with proper organized games and curriculum is rare.
I want to provide my students with the opportunity to play more games and get more quality time outside (and even inside when it rains!). The supplies on this project can do just that. Most of the supplies on this list, like the cones, pins, 3-legged-race straps, relay batons, and bean bags can be used to play a wide variety of games, games I've played with other students in after school care programs that I now want to integrate into my own classroom. The remainder of the items, jump ropes, hoola hoops, tug-of-war rope, and dodge balls provide students with a wider variety of games to play during structured PE time and free recess play as well.
PE curriculum and outside time are so rarely given at my school, and if has its effect on the students. Most of these kids enjoy sports and even just so much as running laps, so with the tools I have, I try to provide these activities. However, with your help, I can bring so many more games and activities to my class that will keep these students moving, active, and engaged!
