Preschoolers with special needs attending my program require a variety of resources to teach skills that will help them socialize successfully with their typically developing peers.
The Ready, Set, Go… program, provides a unique athletic experience that will promote lifelong fitness, improved social skills and confidence that extend beyond the classroom and into the community.
Confidence, skill and determination are common benefits of involvement with sports. This program will create an environment that promotes endurance, strength and flexibility. Ready, Set, Go… will include regular physical activities such as play, social support, lessons in healthy nutrition and a parent component to enable me to generalize experiences from the school program. Children’s involvement in this program will provide a foundation of fitness.
According to The American Heart Association, physical inactivity is considered a risk factor for developing coronary artery disease and increases the risk of stroke, obesity, high blood pressure, low HDL cholesterol levels, and diabetes. The American Heart Association recommends a daily combination of moderate and vigorous physical activity for children. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, over the past three decades the childhood obesity rate has more than doubled for preschool children aged 2-5 years.
I strongly believe there is a need to develop a physical activity program for my preschoolers. In addition, a full physical activity program will support the social skills and language development in a stimulating environment. There currently is not a physical education program provided by any school district to preschoolers. These improvements will add up to measurable physical fitness and social benefits. Keeping preschoolers healthy is an everyday effort. Physical fitness will become a way of life.
Ready, Set, Go… will provide and deliver meaningful physical activity experience to our preschoolers. I recognize the importance of bridging the home school relationship which supports and encourages our preschooler’s progress. I will provide a newsletter to our parents which will include suggested activities and healthy recipes. In addition, I will schedule parent participation days which will support the basic skills that are relevant to my grant.
