Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
“Step into my shoes,
and walk the life
I’m living,
and if you
get as far
as I am,
just maybe you will see
how strong, I really am”
On September my students will come ready to learn. My students are respectful, motivated, young boys and girls who have been diagnosed with a learning disability.
My students are bright, enthusiastic, and they love to learn and explore.
All of them can learn but they need personalized instruction that takes into account their disabilities and needs. My students have trouble remembering what they learn. They have difficulty concentrating, and they need to move frequently. They struggle to express their needs and wants. However, they never give up and they keep trying. Our school is located in the South side of Chicago where students are exposed to high crime rates and gang activity even in their early years.
My Project
My students will be able to work independently when using the assistive reading device. They will be able to scan a book and hear it spoken aloud through the built-in speaker. This device will help them improve their reading skills: fluency and comprehension.
The Interactive Reading Book Sets will allow the use of visual strategies to develop literacy skills. Students will learn to associate pictures with words and then create simple sentences visually by attaching the correct picture cards on the correct squares of each sentence page.
The 5 W questioning game, teaches students to answer who, what, when, where, and why questions designed to test comprehension, collecting points as they move around the game board.
The Portable Visual Schedule Pocket Chart will help to organize and structure daily activities for students who have difficulties transitioning in the classroom and school setting.
My students are an example to their peers and the adults who work with them, because they teach us to never give up.
Students will be able to work independently when using the assistive reading device. Students will improve their literacy skills and reading comprehension when using the interactive books. As my students' literacy skills improve their self-esteem will improve.
