My students need materials to foster creativity, focus and organization. Magnet tiles will be available to use imaginative exploration. Student headphones and chair tennys provide elimination of sensory distraction while completing individualized work tasks.
As a teacher of students with high functioning autism, I am inspired by and proud of the resilience each child exhibits, despite being faced with social, emotional and sensory challenges. No two days are carbon copies. My support staff and I must consistently be pro-active in an attempt to minimize situations that may cause a particular student to feel anxiety, uncertainty or agitation. Knowing the competencies, giftedness and fascinations of each student enables us to best meet their academic and social needs.

Next, my job is to build a classroom environment to develop and implement differentiated lessons based upon the individual learning needs and styles of my students. Some students may be focusing on grade level academics, others are further developing positive social skills or learning and applying healthy coping strategies.
As an urban setting school, many of my students come from economically disadvantaged homes. Parents are working long, arduous days to provide basic necessities for their family. While in my care, I strive to offer my students the materials needed to be learners today and leaders tomorrow!
My Project
Sensory tools (stretch foot bands, chair tennys and student headphones) will be provided to help students process and organize sensory information from many senses: sound, touch, movement and body awareness. When my students have minimal sensory distractions, they are better able to focus and learn.
Predictability and organization lead to a feeling of safety and security for students with Autism.
Daily agenda books will be used to record important information and offer a resource for home/school communication. Student dry erase boards enable students to show their independent thoughts and ideas.
Children's books, encouraging flexible thinking, are a valuable resource that let students laugh while learning and develop a growth mindset!
