Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are just turning 5. For many of them, this is their first experience in a school setting. Some of the students have special learning needs; many are learning English for the first time. The majority of their families live below the poverty line, and rely on our free meal plan for their child's breakfast and lunch.
Our school is a high poverty, Title I school, with high expectations for all.
Each day we practice letters, phonics, and sight words. We study science, social studies, and incorporate art daily. At the end of the school day, the children are so excited to see their parents and tell them all the things they did at school. The parents are very supportive, and enjoy spending time with their little ones, reading stories, and learning new things.
My Project
My students will learn the basics of coding with the Botley robot and activity challenge sets. These resources are designed to provide my students with a challenge that is on their level while engaging them in fun and productive learning.
Coding will be an important skill for my students to have as they get older.
By starting now, they will have advantages going forward and will be more successful in the STEM fields. Coding is important to learn because it helps to develop creative problem solving and computational thinking skills. Since the students have to work together to complete tasks, they learn the important skills of cooperation and learning to get along.
