I teach in a small, rural, agricultural community. Most of my students don't travel often outside of a 50-mile radius of our community; therefore, they don't have a lot of experiences outside of school. Our school is a Title I school with approximately 75% of our student body receiving free or reduced-price meals. Our student body consists of about 45% Hispanic, 40% Caucasian, and 10% African American. Most ELL students only speak Spanish at home since their parents speak only Spanish.
Escape rooms are a huge rage with adults, teens, and children. This project will allow me to bring the concept of escape rooms into my classroom and create "breakout" activities to motivate my students to participate in all academic subjects such as STEM, social studies, science, and math.
Breakout Edu materials will engage, motivate, and excite learning in my students.
In teams, students will solve clues, often through research or mathematical solutions. Then, they will use their creative and critical thinking skills to unlock the multiple locks to "breakout" within a specified time limit. These experiences will not only allow my students to practice certain academic standards but will also help build confidence and collaboration among peers.
These materials can be used and adapted to meet any academic standard and will be used for years to come.
