My students need a document camera and 20 writing process folders to use during writing time.

How does a class of twenty share one pack of paper? That is the struggle everyday in our classroom. Students want to share their writing with their classmates yet they are unable to. Reading the story out loud can be intimidating but the desire to share is there. Students want feed back and to connect.
My class is a group of sweet, energetic and talkative students.
They all want to share their thoughts and feelings. It definitely is not a quiet classroom unless they are writing! I have twice as many boys than girls which means more hands-on lessons. My students are from a small city and most of them are from homes that do not have books, school supplies or literature for them. My students are eager to learn to read and write so that they will be prepared for the schooling ahead of them. They understand that reading and writing are needed for any job they may hold in the future.
The document camera will truly make their writing come alive. This resource will allow students to present their stories, letters, and essays in their own hand writing to their peers. Students will be able to see and read the creativeness of their friends independently and then provide feedback. Feedback on if they can read the handwriting but also on what details they want to know or parts that are unclear. This process will not only improve their writing but their communication skills as they learn to respond to critiques and concerns about their work. It will also be available for use in other subjects where it can display what the students are working on, allowing for students with special needs to have an exact copy of the item being taught/discussed. In science, the camera will be able to present in larger than life size experiments for which there are not enough materials for everyone so that all students can participate fully versus craning their necks around others.
Having a document camera in our classroom will enable my students to work together to improve their writing but more importantly they can take ownership of their thoughts and feelings because they are displayed in their handwriting versus the teacher reading them.
For students who do not have a voice at home due to parents who are working, absent, or unable to read themselves, the ability to share with the class could be the one time each day where they are proud, encouraged and eager to learn.
