Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Teaching STEM in a middle school where my students are eager to express themselves is imperative. The school is located in a high poverty location. Most of my students come from single working parent homes. Ninety-two percent of my students are on free or reduced priced lunch program. My students do not have and cannot afford the materials to produce great hands on projects. Even though my students are not living or attending a school in the best area they are eager to learn and let their creative juices flow freely. These students lack avenues and materials to express themselves in a positive way.
For most of my students being able to create something is a mental escape from the rough reality they live in and also great accomplishment when they see the beauty in what they are able to make on their own.
I have 60% hispanic students, 30% African American, and 10% of other races. Not only are my students ethnically different but also academically and the students that not at a proficient level in technology knowledge would greatly benefit from hands-on STEM learning.
My Project
My students need an iPad, a stand, green screen, and a portable studio to create and broadcast their STEM presentation projects. My students are eager to create and make projects where they are the stars of the show. The green screen will allow my students to add a personal touch to their presentations. When they work on their furniture design presentations they can use the green screen to make a commercial. Most of my students make projects that are not able to be shown off in class because of lack of space but having a portable studio will allow my students to broadcast their work even when it is long gone from class which can be added to their electronic portfolios. My students can take pictures of their prototype furniture with the photo studio light box.
Broadcasting all of the projects we do in STEM will allow parents to see what their child is learning in class and how far these students have come in using different types of technology.
Having these materials available for my students to use will allow them to learn to use different technology to enhance their presentations. My students will be able to create Imovies and search for information and take pictures of their projects using the iPads to add to their electronic portfolios.
