This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"To learn to read is to light a fire; every syllable that is spelled out is a spark." Victor Hugo
My students are fascinated with learning, yet most do not walk beyond the poverty stricken neighborhood they live in. Our goal is to take 2,000 Accelerated Reader tests this year! We need books!
My students come from very low income families, quite a few are living with 2-3 families in one apartment.
Many of the parents are working 2 or more jobs just to survive. Our local food bank delivers backpacks of food to the kids so that they have food for the weekends - during the week we know every child will have a minimum of 2 meals each day (school breakfast and school lunch).
Yet in spite of these challenges, my students and their families are focused not only on learning but going to college! Most days families start knocking on the classroom door an hour before school to work on learning concepts and in the afternoons you will find parents, older siblings or grandparents in my classroom reading, working, or using the computer with their kindergartener. Our families are determined that their children are going to succeed. My school is a "walking school" - most families live in the same two square blocks as the school.
My Project
My students love to learn and at the young age of 5 - All are focused on going to college! For most of my students, they will be the first child in their family to even graduate high school.
I am requesting 60 high interest beginning level fiction books that my kindergartners will feel successful reading. Once a child learns to read the fire is lit and the eyes just spark with excitement. It is exciting to hear children read to their families or out loud for the first time!
This year, our class goal is to take 2,000 Accelerated Reader tests. Accelerated Reader is an online reading program that tests reading comprehension. This set of 60 books x 25 students will help us almost meet our goal! If every students reads every book then they will take 1,500 tests this year alone! Forget the numbers, just think about the reading comprehension that will be more importantly impacted.
This project is HUGE!
The lives of my current 25 students will be greatly impacted by this reading project, but so will their families, their siblings, and my future students.
Please help Accelerate our Reading.
As more and more of our families come into the classroom before and after school, I have noticed that parent literacy is beginning to improve. Parents and grandparents have access to simple, non-threatening material and are learning to read along with their students.
