This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I work in a high need area that is apart of a large African American community. My school serves all the Kindergarten students for the whole district. For many of my students, this may be their first time to come to school and they're struggling with the transition. I want to create a more play based learning environment in my classroom to help ease the transition. As a special education teacher, many of my students have communication needs that prevent them from verbalizing their wants and needs. It is my goal as a teacher to create a space where they feel loved and safe to play and grow.
My Project
My students need leveled readers to provide appropriate curriculum support as they master their ABC's. Students have a challenging time transitioning from learning the ABC's and the sounds and using that knowledge to read words. They learn sight words, but very few curriculum units provide small step instruction as students begin to read.
Leveled readers provide systematic curriculum that assist students in step by step instruction as they work to transition into becoming a fluent reader.
These materials will assist students in having the "just right" level of instruction because it allows students to move up a level as they grow as readers.
