Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a child, what was your favorite time of the day in school? In my class, I would say that most students would agree that the time they enjoy the most are the ten minutes where I read a chapter book to them.
This year I am teaching a combination classroom comprised of first and second graders in a school where all children qualify for free school lunch.
One of the challenges that I face with a combination classroom is teaching them all the required standards for their grade level in half the time. Although my students are at different academic levels, one thing that they all have in common is that hunger for stories, especially if they are being read to.
My Project
Since the beginning of the school year, one of the daily routines in my class is read-aloud time. This time usually happens right after recess and it is a quick read of a chapter book. It is during this period of time when I notice the greatest engagement even from those students that don't normally feel comfortable reading on their own. It is also during this time, that I've introduced my class to the "Ready, Freddy!" books and the students have really embraced the stories and the characters. Every day that I finish the day's chapter, the students beg me to keep going and ask for more. This is why I am taking this opportunity to request the complete set of "Ready, Freddy!" books, because I've noticed that as soon as I put the finished book into the library collection, they all want to pick it up and read it again. Since I have first graders, I am also requesting another collection of books that my kids have really enjoyed, Fly Guy!.
