I teach in a school that serves birth-fifth graders. Our population qualifies for over 50% free and reduced-price lunch. The mission of our district is to provide place-based learning opportunities for our students. We are unique in that we live on the water.
My students are able to integrate learning standards by going outdoors.
For example, we integrate measurement standards and social studies standards by visiting a local tribal land to measure trees at a restoration site for the tribal biologist and learn about the native culture in our area.
My students need a way to document their learning while in the classroom and when we take our learning outdoors. Students can take photos with a Sony digital camera and use them in all curricular areas including math, science, social studies and literacy.
Students' digital portfolios will help our classroom by helping them to be more organized and by using less paper.
Often times, students lose their finished work and find it difficult to organize their portfolios. They can use the documentation of their photos for keeping digital evidence of their learning that can be shared with families throughout the year. No more lost evidence and at the same time helping the environment by using less paper!
