Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I teach kindergarten, but I volunteer to coach my school's third grade Battle of the Books Club. These students have worked extremely hard to read 10 to 15 books from a list of required reading for the program. During the Battle, they will compete by answering comprehension questions about the books on this list. Their reading levels have grown as well because of the challenge presented to read these books in order to be able to compete. I have worked so hard to aquire 15 copies of each book. These books can be used year after year to challenge and inspire readers to read unfamiliar titles by amazing authors, ones that they normally wouldn't choose. This process broadens their horizons, shaping them to become voracious, adventurous readers, all while improving their reading fluency.

The only two books (out of 15) that I have not been able to find inexpensive or used copies of are Armando and the Blue Tarp School and Tomas and the Library Lady.

The club has a large population of Hispanic students who would benefit from exposure to literature that contain characters that represent their culture. Both of these amazing books teach children about the obstacles that prevent disadvantaged children from of being able to learn and read. Both of these thought-provoking books will teach my students that being able to learn is precious and not always a right given freely to all children.
