Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The classroom is changing every day. Students need to be prepared for a business world full of technology and collaboration. The 21st Century learner is exposed to new situations and as their teacher I can either go along and support their new thinking, or get in their way. I'm up for the change!
I have a wonderful group of sixth graders.
This has been a special group for me because, despite all of their needs and differences, they are so kind to each other. The school we attend is a Title One school and most of my kids have educational needs and financial needs. Our school is 75% free and reduced. To me the numbers don't mean that much when I'm planning a lesson because it's what we do while we are together that matters. I want these kids, and kids in the future to have the chance to get ahead in life. I want them to be given a shot at a successful future and to be able to compete with other students who may be coming from more fortunate areas. I know these are just tables but it is one more step towards the unique thinking and collaborating they need. Putting these kids in a classroom that is forward thinking is what I'm hoping to do to help them.
My Project
Seven round tables. My first step will be to remove all of the desks in my room and have the students sit and tables. They will be across from one another and next to one another, setting up an environment that breeds collaboration and communication. I know these are just tables but it is the thinking around the tables that is special. I plan to rethink outdated paradigms and work hard to change deeply embedded habits, all the while getting ever more comfortable with ambiguity and less control of student learning. My students will learn how to create self-organized learning environments, a kind of framework for self-directed learning and learning through play and the sharing of ideas.
This project will change my classroom forever.
It will continue to fuel the passion I have for setting up an environment that breeds forward thinking. This project will open the eyes of my students to the power of their words and how they can be used as a tool to access and reach out to others. My hope is to see a new way of thinking in my students that opens our minds and brings ideas that are student lead and backed by new found confidence, due to new found skills, from now into the future.
