My students need materials to make stem kits, a vocabulary bundle, colored paper and laminating pouches to make task cards, and a strategy board game for math centers.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The students at my school are an energetic and hardworking group of children. They enjoy coming to school, but school funding cuts over the years have impacted what schools can provide to individual classrooms.
I teach second grade in an urban neighborhood where all the students at school are eligible for free breakfast and free lunch.
Some students live below the poverty line and their families struggle to provide them with basic necessities needed to be successful in school. Despite these obstacles, our school has hard-working students, as well as teachers and staff, who strive to make our school a welcoming and inviting place. In addition, our school is one of the top-performing schools in the city.
My Project
My students work in small groups for literacy and math on a daily basis. This allows me to meet with small groups of students and differentiate instruction according to the need of my students. While I am working with small groups, it is important for the rest of the class to be fully engaged in their own work. This can be independent work, partner work, and/or working within a small group without the teacher. Therefore, they students need fun and motivating activities. I am requesting several resources that are focused on STEM activities (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math).
These resources are hands-on activities that promote higher-level critical thinking skills, problem-solving skills, and collaboration with others.
The pipe cleaners, playing cards, and index cards are some of the items used in the STEM kits. Students will use the items to build and create different structures, such as a house of cards. There are also extension activities in the stem kits. For example, students will have to make a structure that can support mass. One of my math stations is board games, which encourages the use of different strategies. Students love playing games, so am requesting the Pirates vs. Pirates game to add to the board game station. The additional resources such as binders, cardstock, and laminating pouches will be used to make task cards and keep everything organized.
